Brainwashing A Better Weapon

I know I’m showing my age but I remember when the boogieman lived in Russia. Growing up I felt we didn’t know much about what went on behind the Iron Curtain. I knew that growing up I heard stories of how people that had to wait in lines for food or even for toilet paper. We learned that these peoples’ jobs, houses, lives were chosen for them. That they didn’t have the choices that we had. It presented us with a clear contrast of what it was to be an American. How if we failed it was up to us to try again. We grew up being told we could be whatever we wanted.

The children, teens and even young adults don’t know about what we knew about. With the fall of the Berlin Wall people gained their freedom and I’m thankful that I got to witness that piece of history. When the wall came down though we lost our constant reminder of what it was not to be free. Ronald Reagan told kids in his farewell address that if your parents aren’t telling you what it means to be an American to call them on it. Now we as parents need to call ourselves on it and teach our kids what a truly wonderful place America is. Because if we don’t teach them someone else will teach them differently.
