The Giver by Lois Lowry

Last summer I read a very thought provoking book titled The Giver I had to buy the book for my son to read in school.  He told me it was a very interesting book and that I should read it also.

The book is about a young man that lives in a utopian society where “they” have tried to plan for everything.  Each family is given two children, one boy and one girl.  Everyone is assigned their jobs and their spouse.  The world is only seen in shades of gray. The people have very little emotions at all and at puberity are given a pill to prevent what the book calls “stirrings” which they will take for the rest of their lives.  The whole idea of the society in the book is to achieve “sameness”.

There is so much more I would love to tell you but I don’t want to be a spoiler.  I wish I had the words to explain how incredible this book was and how much it had me thinking about the world we live in.  How wonderful it is to be unique and have your own feelings whether they are good or bad.

If you do read the book or have read it please leave a comment and let me know what you think of it.
